Tomasz Opania was born in 1970 in Gliwice. In 1994 he obtained a diploma in sculpture from the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wrocław. He received the following scholarships: 1993 – scholarship of the Minister of Culture, 1994 – scholarship of the Government of Swiss Confederation for young artists. In years 1994-1996 he studied at Ecole Supérieure d’Arts Visuelles in Geneva. Since 1996 he has been working at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, first as graduate assistant and then as assistant professor, he conducted sculpture classes (1996-2012) and since 2011 he started teaching art in public space course. He is the co-creator and director (2012-2014) of art mediation, a new course at the Academy of Fine Arts. He is involved with sculpture, installation, performance, activities in public space and design. He builds “art tools”: objects. devices and inventions. He works with professionals in many fields and in his realisations uses various techniques, often just for the purpose of one project. He treats his works as a comment on current events and the reality that surrounds him.

It is a kinetic object/device that pumps the air in turns from one cubicle to another that refers to mutual relations and unnoticeable but fundamental activities. Cubicles puff up and suck in in turns remaining in a closed circuit and 1mm thick steel sheet used for the construction of the sculpture deflects in a way intended by the author but not entirely under control. The sounds and cracks that accompany the process turn the steel cubicles in idiophones of some sort.
Materials: steel sheet, vacuum cleaner engines, time switch, cables.
